Students of Civil Engineering at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, have been urged to embrace technocracy and sustainability as essential tools for national development. The charge was given during the 2nd Annual Conference of the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers Students' Affiliate (NICESA), The Polytechnic, Ibadan Chapter, themed “Technocracy in Sustaining the Blue Economy.” The conference featured lectures and presentations from distinguished scholars and professionals in the engineering sector, all of whom emphasized the importance of expertise, innovation, and sustainable practices in driving Nigeria's economic growth.
In his welcome address, the President of NICESA, The Polytechnic, Ibadan Chapter, Comrade Enoch Subuloye, encouraged young people to actively participate in the nation-building process. He noted that the conference was organized to promote discussions on sustainable economic and environmental development for the benefit of future generations. He further urged participants to take advantage of the networking opportunities provided by the conference and leave with renewed hope and vision for a prosperous Nigeria.
While delivering the keynote address, Engr. A. G. Oyeniyi examined critical issues affecting Nigeria's economy and explained their relevance to the conference theme. He stressed the need for professionals and technical experts to apply their knowledge and skills toward ensuring sustainable economic growth and development.
In his lecture, Engr. Dr. Olorunfemi Idowu Ezekiel explained that sustainability rests on three major pillars: social equity, economic sustainability, and environmental sustainability. According to him, achieving sustainable development requires a careful balance of these interconnected elements, as neglecting any one of them could hinder long-term progress.
Prof. Olumuyiwa Idowu Ojo highlighted the significance of technocracy in sustaining the blue economy. He underscored the importance of innovation, research, and professional expertise in addressing societal challenges and maximizing the opportunities available within Nigeria's marine and aquatic resources.
As the conference drew to a close, the leadership of NICESA reaffirmed its commitment to organizing programmes that expose students to contemporary issues in engineering, sustainability, and national development, while equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute meaningfully to society.
