To widen the horizon of the students on the practical aspect of journalism, the Head of the Department of Mass Communication, Mr. Najeemdeen Adunola, has counseled the students to be multi-skilled and inclined to practicals.
The head of the department made this statement during the HND2 students’ studio practical for the course MAC 416 Radio News Production at the department, north campus, today.
While addressing the students at the studio, Adunola stated that Mass Communication is not a ‘chalk-to-board’ course like marketing, public administration, and other courses, which are only taught in the four walls of the classrooms, but it is practical oriented course.
He says, “If you are not practically inclined, you can never be a good Mass Communication person either in broadcast or print. Because there is no how you will be a broadcast or print journalist, that studio or press equipment would be aliens to you. You must be able to use this equipment which is the essence of the practical aspect of your course.”
“It is only required creativity and practicals in your course of study that can guarantee and secure you the kind of employment that will satisfy you, unlike those days when you would submit an application letter and be waiting for employment in the four corners of your room,” he added.

So, you can run away from the practical classes.”
He implored the students to be serious and follow up on their practical classes and wished them all the best.
During his short interview with Ascom Press correspondents, an Actor and HND2 student who is popularly called ‘Majekobaje Masscom,’ Amb. Olukayode Temola gave kudos to the management, department, and the course coordinator, Mr. Olubukola Adio, for the privilege given to them in acquiring industrial experience while in school.
“I believe so well that this program will give the kind of illumination into knowing what Mass Communication is all about, most especially for both print and broadcast students. The course is not all about the theoretical aspect, the practical aspect gives us exposure to knowing what the world of broadcasting is all about, and this is not the first and second time we are doing the practicals,” Temola said.
Temola debunked the allegations against the Mass communication department by some evil-doers regarding the lack of practical sessions in the department. In his words, “It was a lie; Mass Communication department has been known for these practical classes for a long time. I gained my experiences from this department which makes me fit to anchor a program on air perfectly.”
He advised his colleagues to put their minds into whatever was being taught in practical classes and sought the support of the incumbent Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde for the renovation of the department studios.
