The Polytechnic, Ibadan has reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing future leaders in the media industry through a seminar themed “Skills and Assets for Succeeding as a Media Professional.” The event, organized by the institution’s Career Service Centre, took place at the North Campus Assembly Hall and drew a diverse audience of students, lecturers, and industry stakeholders eager to gain insights into the fast-changing media landscape.
The seminar featured a panel of seasoned media experts, including Mrs. Bolatito Joseph, former General Manager of Radio Nigeria and current GM of Reiz FM; Mr. Sina Oladehinde, Editor of Sunday Tribune Newspaper; Mr. Femi Ipadeola, a former Channels TV broadcaster; and Mr. Victor Aiyetoro, Head of Broadcasting and Communications at Odua Investment Company Limited. Each facilitator shared practical advice on the qualities and skills required for excellence in the media profession.
Mrs. Joseph underscored the value of confidence and authenticity in broadcasting. “A clear and audible voice, alongside the ability to think on your feet, is fundamental for effective communication in media,” she said.
Speaking from his editorial experience, Mr. Oladehinde emphasized the importance of strong communication skills, working under pressure, and meeting deadlines. He urged aspiring professionals to commit to continuous self-development. “Communicate well. As a communicator, your English should be more fluent than that of English students,” he advised.
Mr. Aiyetoro highlighted the critical role of public relations in media, stressing the importance of networking and relationship-building with journalists and the public.
Meanwhile, Mr. Ipadeola focused on the power of research and preparation in content creation. “Thorough preparation and an understanding of your audience are key to crafting impactful media content,” he said, adding in his characteristic phrase, “Watin you carry”—a reminder that what you know is what you have to offer.
The event was attended by top dignitaries, including the Rector, Dr. Lasisi; the Registrar; the Head of Department of Mass Communication, Dr. Olusoji Olatunji; lecturers; Career Service staff; and a large turnout of students.
In his closing remarks, the host, Dr. Olumuyiwa K. Ojo, assured participants that the seminar marked only the beginning of more impactful engagements. “The success of this seminar further solidifies The Polytechnic, Ibadan’s role as a pivotal institution in nurturing future leaders in the media industry,” he noted, encouraging students to put the lessons learned into practice.
