The President of NASSSU, The Polytechnic Ibadan Chapter, Igwe Grace, has urged students to embrace skill acquisition as a pathway to self-reliance and economic empowerment. She gave the charge during the association’s Skill Acquisition 2.0 programme, which was organised to equip students with practical and income-generating skills.
The programme, which featured training sessions in phone graphic design, multipurpose liquid soap production, and cooking, was attended by leaders of various indigenous student associations. Among the notable guests were Awotunde Titilope Sarah, President of the Federation of Oyo State Students, and Adesola Gbolahan Yusuf, President of the Federation of Ibadan Students.
During the graphic design session, participants were introduced to the use of PixelLab for creating business materials such as banners, flyers, and logos. They were also exposed to other graphic design software, including Photoshop and Canva, to broaden their design skills and creative capacity.
The programme further featured a practical session on the step-by-step production of multipurpose liquid soap suitable for laundry and household use. In the cooking segment, participants learned how to prepare Egusi soup, a popular Nigerian delicacy.
To assess participants’ understanding of the various training sessions, an interactive question-and-answer exercise was conducted. At the end of the exercise, Ademosu Olamilekan emerged as the best participant in the soap-making category, while Bello Mariam was recognised as the outstanding participant in phone graphic design. Recreational games were also organised to promote interaction, networking, and engagement among members.
Speaking at the event, the Social Director expressed appreciation to all participants, guests, and facilitators for their support, attendance, and contributions toward the success of the programme.
NASSSU Skill Acquisition 2.0 reflects the association’s commitment to promoting entrepreneurship and reducing graduate unemployment by equipping students with practical, marketable, and sustainable skills capable of creating employment opportunities and fostering self-development.
