The Association of Student Communicators (ASCOM) Alumni, 2006 Set of The Polytechnic Ibadan, has donated three computer systems to the Department of Mass Communication to promote digital learning and strengthen practical training for students.
The presentation ceremony took place at the office of the Head of Department (HOD), located within the Faculty of Business and Communication Studies.
Speaking on behalf of the President of the 2006 Set, Mr. Lawal Abass, the Vice President, Mrs. Adewumi Hazzan, a media entrepreneur, described the donation as more than a presentation of equipment, saying it was a demonstration of gratitude and a reminder of where their professional journey began.
She noted that the gesture reflects the alumni's commitment to giving back to their alma mater, stressing that true success is measured by the ability to uplift others.
According to her, the members of the 2006 Set have demonstrated that graduates of Mass Communication create, lead, and contribute meaningfully to society. She also appreciated the lecturers in the department for nurturing professionals whose voices continue to shape future generations.
"We are presenting these computer systems to the Department of Mass Communication to enhance the learning experience of students," she said.
Receiving the donation, the Head of the Department of Mass Communication, Dr. Olusoji Olatunji, expressed heartfelt appreciation to the 2006 Set for remembering both serving and retired lecturers through the generous gesture. He described the donation as a meaningful contribution to the development of the department and encouraged other alumni and stakeholders to emulate the initiative by giving back to their alma mater.
"We sincerely appreciate the kind gesture of the 2006 Set for donating three digital computer systems to the department. This will go a long way in enhancing the teaching and learning experience of our students," he said.
Dr. Olatunji further assured the alumni that the department would make judicious use of the equipment and maintain it properly. He also disclosed that plans are underway to establish a video editing studio for the department in the near future.
Among the alumni present at the event were Honourable Kolawole Adigun, Senior Special Assistant to the Oyo State Governor; Dr. Peter Oladeji, Senior Lecturer at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti; Dr. Fashipe Adeshola; and Mrs. Adewumi Hazzan, Vice President of the ASCOM Alumni 2006 Set, alongside other distinguished members of the alumni association.
Speaking on behalf of the students, the President of ASCOM for the 2025/2026 academic session, Frank Ohamuo, commended the alumni for their generosity. Similarly, the Editor-in-Chief of ASCOM PRESS, Okon Kingsley, described the donation as a timely intervention that would significantly strengthen the department's practical training and digital learning capacity.
The recent donation by the ASCOM Alumni 2006 Set once again reflects the calibre of professionals the Department of Mass Communication, The Polytechnic Ibadan, has nurtured over the years. Their generous contribution underscores the department's legacy of producing industry leaders making meaningful impacts across Nigeria and beyond. It also serves as a call to other alumni to give back to their alma mater and contribute to the continued growth and development of the department.
