The Department of Local Government and Development Studies, The Polytechnic, Ibadan, has commissioned a students’ self-help toilet project to ease the long-standing sanitation challenges students face.
The Department of Local Government and Development Studies, The Polytechnic, Ibadan, has commissioned a students’ self-help toilet project to ease the long-standing sanitation challenges students face.
The facility was officially inaugurated in the presence of management staff, lecturers, students, and other invited guests.
The idea for the project was first conceived in 2021 by the then Head of Department, Barr. Oladepo Kazeem Adebowale following complaints about the absence of a toilet since the department was separated from the Public Administration Department in 2014.
According to him, the lack of such a facility had caused discomfort for students over the years.
Although the project experienced setbacks during his two-year absence as HOD, Barr. Adebwale explained that his return to the leadership position in 2023 revived the initiative, which eventually reached completion in 2025.
He expressed gratitude to the management of the institution for providing land and support to make the facility a reality.
Speaking at the commissioning, the Deputy Rector, Mrs. Olaide Salawu, who represented the Rector, Dr. Lasisi Taiwo Abideen, commended the Acting HOD for his determination and commitment.
She further urged lecturers to emulate the gesture, stressing that “lecturers should always work hand in hand with students and also have a cordial relationship with them.”
The ceremony was attended by notable personalities, including Dr. Adesiyan Emmanuel Ayobami, the pioneer HOD of the department; as well as lecturers such as Dr. Banji Adepoju, Mr. Amusat Kabiru, Mrs. Adeleke Bushrooh, and Mr. Ajao Sherif. Acting Dean of the Faculty appreciated the management, guests, and staff of the department for their collective support in making the project a success, noting that the facility will go a long way in improving the welfare of students.
